Arnaldo Mesa was born December 6, 1967, in Holguin, Cuba. In amateurs, Mesa fought at bantam and feather weights. The southpaw technician with very good movement on his feet, Mesa won the Cuban Nationals for the five times. 1986, in Reno, Nevada, US, he won the World Championships bronze medal at 54 Kilo, in the semi-finals losing to the next champion and the future World professional champion, Moon Sung Kil of South Korea. 1989, in Moscow, Arnaldo again won the World Championships bronze in 57 Kilo. This time in the semies he lost to the Russian, Ayrat Hamatov, who also became the World Champion. Another bronze of World Championships came in Sydney'1991. 1991 and 1995, Mesa becomes the winner of PanAmerican Games, but in 1996 on the Olympics in Atlanta, Arnaldo became the runner-up. In the semi-finals he beats European and the World Champion, Raimkul Malachbekov from Russia, but in the final lost to Hungarian, Istvan Kovacz, who later on also becomes the World Champion as pro.
At the end of the last week, the ex-boxer was placed to the hospital at his hometown. Today Arnaldo suffered the heart attack and his heart died within him. Arnaldo Mesa was 46!
