On May 27, 2012 in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 45 died 3 division 21-time world champion Johnny "Mi Vida Loca" Tapia.

Johnny Tapia became WBO super-flyweight champion of the world for first time in 1994, for the vacant title beating by TKO in 11 Henry Martinez of Salvador. Later on Johnny had WBA, IBF and WBO belts in two more divisions, bantam and feather weight included. Among his opponents was such a great fighters as; Arthur Johnson, Hugo Soto, Danny Romero, Nana Konadu, Paulie Ayala, Jorge Elicier Julio, Cuahtemoc Gomez, Cesar Soto, Manuel Medina, Marco Antonio Barrera, Frankie Archuleta, Mauricio Pastrana. Johnny Tapia is recognized as one of the greatest fighters of super-fly and bantamweight divisions.

For last two years Johnny had a serious problems with cocaine addiction, alcochol, depression and legal troubles.
