Today, September 9, his 80-th Anniversary is celebrating one of the greatest ever Puertorican boxer, multiple world champion, Carlos Ortiz.
Carlos Juan Ortiz was born in 1936, Ponce, Puerto Rico. While being the teenager his family moves to Brooklyn, NY, where he started to box professionally at the age of 19, in 1955. He went unbeaten in his first 27 fights, before he've been tested properly and reached his first light-welterweight world titles in 1959, beating by TKO in the 2-nd experienced Kenny Lane. Later on, Carlos had the famous fight trilogy against the great Italian, Duilio Loi, with one win and two losses. In early 60's, moving down to the lightweight, Carlos won WBA and WBC lightweight belts and defends them against number of the great fighters of his generation, including; Joe Brown, great Philipino Flash Elorde, Panamian Ismael Laguna, Argentinian legend Nicolino Locche, Cuban Sugar Ramos. Ortiz's last fight was in 1972, when he lost by TKO in 6-th to the Scotish warrior, Ken Buchanan.
Carlos Ortiz's final record is 61(30 KO)-7(1 KO)-1. Ortiz has won WBA, WBC, NBA, NYSAC and absolute World titles for three times with eleven succesful defences. In spite of that, that all his life Ortiz has spent in the States, in Puerto Rico he still be a national hero and one of the greatest athletes ever. He is also considered as the one of the greatest lightweights ever, he is also the member of International Boxing Hall of Fame. Carlos Ortiz still living in New York and today is his Big Day- 80!
